DUTCHMEN'S HOT SHOOTING DROPS CLARKSON, 66-56

January 28, 2005

Potsdam, NY – John Cagianello and Devon Bruce each scored 15 points as Union College defeated the Clarkson University Men’s Basketball team 66-56 in a Liberty League match up Friday night at Alumni Gymnasium.

The Golden Knights dropped to 5-12 overall and 1-5 in conference play and Union improved to 9-8 and evened their conference mark at 3-3. Clarkson hosts Skidmore tomorrow afternoon at 4 pm.

The two teams went back and forth for the opening 20 minutes, with no team ever able to take more than a four-point advantage. Both teams held small advantages throughout the half, but the first half ended with the two teams tied at 26.

In the second half, the Dutchmen were finally able to break the deadlock as they went on a 16-7 run over a 6:30 span in the middle of the second 20 minutes. Without senior guard Matt Decker (Whitney Point, NY), who went down with an ankle injury late in the first half, the Knights struggled to run their offense smoothly as they turned the ball over eight times. Union was able to take advantage of their high-percentage shots, boasting a 61.1 field goal percentage in the second half.

Sophomore forward Erick Vigansky (Kenosha, WI) scored 12 points to lead the Golden Knights. Junior Russ Vitallo (Dracut, MA) and freshman Adam Larkin (Goffstown, NH) each scored 10 points for Clarkson.

Sophomore Joe Mackey added 11 points for Union.
