HERONS HOLD DOWN KNIGHTS IN 2nd HALF, CLARKSON FALLS 68-45

Potsdam, NY - Freshman Stephanie Czajkowski scored a game-high 14 points as William Smith defeated the Clarkson University Women's Basketball team 68-45 in a Liberty League conference game Saturday afternoon at Alumni Gymnasium.

The Golden Knights dropped to 3-10 overall and 0-2 in conference play, while William Smith moved to 6-4 and 2-0 in league play.

The first half was 20 minutes of runs by each team. Clarkson jumped out to a 4-0 lead through the first five minutes, but the Herons then went on a 25-2 run over the middle 10 minutes to take a commanding 25-6 lead. However, Clarkson finished the final five minutes with a 18-6 run of their own to narrow the halftime deficit to just seven points at 31-24.

Clarkson struggled from the floor in the second half, unable to record a field goal until the 1:44 mark. The Herons took advantage and extended their lead to double digits early in the half and were able to hold on for the win. The Golden Knights shot just 3-for-20 from the floor in the final 20 minutes, but did make 15 of their 17 free throw attempts.

Freshman Amanda Czop (Athens, NY) scored a team-high 12 points for the Knights. Linda Fernandez (Kennebunkport, ME) made six steals for Clarkson.

Marisa Vespa scored 10 points, made four steals and dished out six assists for William Smith. Pria Young also added 12 points for the Herons while Tanya Richvalsky contributed seven points, 12 rebounds, and six steals.
