CLARKSON SWEEPS SLU in UCAA OPENER, PLAY UofR at SLU on Saturday

JJ Lorence pitched the Knights to a 4-1 victory at SLU in the first game of a doubleheader

Canton, NY - With two solid pitching performances from juniors J.J. Lorence (Liverpool, NY) and Andy Noonan (Central Square, NY), the Clarkson University Baseball team swept an Upstate Collegiate Athletic Association (UCAA) doubleheader from St. Lawrence University Friday afternoon, winning 4-1 in a seven-inning game and 4-3 in the nine-inning game.

The Golden Knights improved to 8-9 overall and 2-0 in the UCAA while St. Lawrence fell to 2-12 and 0-2. Clarkson faces the University of Rochester at SLU at 1:00 pm on Saturday. 

Lorence threw a seven-inning three-hitter in the opener, striking out three batters and walking none to improve to 2-1 on the season. The junior right-hander gave up a run and three hits in the first three frames, but allowed only two base runners the final four innings on a hit by pitch and an error.

Rob Cowin (Albany, NY) scored two runs from the leadoff spot, reaching base on a walk twice and singling in the third. He scored both of his runs on wild pitches. Brandon Barcomb (Cadyville, NY) also went 1-for-2 with a run scored and two stolen bases while John Smith (Hermon, NY) went 1-for-3 with an RBI. Junior Mike Onisk (Baldwinsville, NY) was the lone Clarkson player with two hits, going 2-for-3.

In the second game, Noonan pitched six and a third innings, striking out eight and scattering seven hits while giving up just one run. John Smith came on in the ninth inning to earn the save, striking out two. Barcomb went 3-for-4 with a double and an RBI. Tom Lilienthal (Baldwinsville, NY) and TJ Brinkman (Troy, NY) each went 2-for-4 with two singles.
