KNIGHTS RALLY for OVERTIME WIN

January 17, 2004

Brodie Rutherglen scored the winning goal in OT at Vermont on Saturday
Freshman Brodie Rutherglen (Trail, BC) capped off a dramatic win for the Clarkson University Hockey team on Saturday night as the Golden Knights rallied for a 3-2 overtime victory over the University of Vermont before 3,780 fans at Gutterson Fieldhouse in Burlington.

Rutherglen took a pass in the slot from junior Jay Latulippe (Saratoga Springs, NY) and wristed in a high shot for his second career goal just 1:46 into sudden death overtime. Senior Rob McFeeters (Woodville, ONT) also assisted on the game-winner.

Clarkson, which battled back to tie Dartmouth 2-2 on Friday, stands at 10-8-5 overall and 5-4-2 in the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC). The Knights close out a five-game road trip next Saturday at St. Lawrence.

"I thought they outplayed us for pretty much the entire game," stated Clarkson head coach George Roll. "In the last five minutes our guys played awfully hard and competed. We found a way to win. It has been kind of a trademark of our team to bounce back, and we did that again tonight."

After skating to a scoreless tie through the first 45 minutes of Saturday’s game, the Catamounts broke the deadlock with the first goal of the contest, a power-play marker at 5:47 of the third. With less than four minutes to play, the Knights’ leading scorer Mac Faulkner (King City, ONT) sent in a shot from the top of the right circle through a screen to tie the game at 16:41 on his 10th goal of the year. Vermont went back on top 2-1 with 1:45 left in regulation, but once again the Green and Gold answered back when freshman Mike Sullivan (Stouffville, ONT), who set up the Knights’ first goal, tallied his fifth goal of the year off assists from junior Chris Blight (Cambridge, ONT) and freshman Jamie McKinven (Kingston, ONT) with just 46 seconds remaining in the third.

Vermont outshot Clarkson 37-22, but sophomore Dustin Traylen (Kirkland, QUE), who made a career-high 43 saves in Friday’s tie against the Big Green, responded with 35 stops against the Catamounts. The Knights were 0-of-4 on the power play, while Vermont was 1-of-5 with the extra skater
