VITALLO'S LAY UP ENDS UNION'S 10-GAME WINNING STREAK

January 16, 2004

Schenectady, NY - Sophomore forward Russ Vitallo (Dracut, MA) converted a lay up with 32 seconds remaining as the Clarkson University Men's Basketball team came back to defeat Union College 57-56 in an Upstate Collegiate Athletic Association (UCAA) league contest Friday evening.

The Golden Knights trailed by three points with 2:37 remaining, but Josh Harner's (Houston, TX) jumper closed the gap to a single point with just over two minutes left. Union's last-second shot failed, giving the Golden Knights their fourth straight win, pushing Clarkson to 7-5 overall and 1-0 in the UCAA. Union fell to 10-2 overall and 1-1 in the UCAA, dropping their first game since they opened the season with a loss to defending National Champion Williams College.

Harner scored a game-high 20 points to lead the Golden Knights, shooting 7-for-13 from the field and 2-for-4 from beyond the 3-point line. Vitallo contributed 12 points and six rebounds while Nick Jones (Washington, DC) added seven points, six rebounds and three steals. Clarkson shot just 35.7 percent from the floor and 29.4 percent from the 3-point line.

Brian Scordato led Union with 17 points and 12 rebounds and John Cagianello added 13 points. Devon Bruce also scored 10 points and added eight rebounds.

The Golden Knights close out their two-game UCAA road trip on Saturday when they face Skidmore College.
